Week 158: Musicians Toolkit

My last blog was the 18th of June. This summer I put my music on hold. Here in Spain, summer means '4 months', from June to the end of September. October was an important month and I needed to sort out my work teaching English.

I've invested in some music tools, mainly applications for the iPad which help you to manage time practicing and rehearsing. There is a wonderful app called Anytune which allows you to change the pitch of a song that you have in your iTunes library, so you can sing along at the correct pitch for you. It allows looping to practice those solos or difficult parts over and over at a fixed tempo or increasing, to help you get up to the original speed of the song.

With some added paid features, you can also import audio files by wifi, from emails and other applications like Dropbox. Adding Marks and specific comments to each song as well as breaking down the structure to practice individual verses, choruses, solos etc... a must have tool for aspiring music performers and composers.

The other application that is very useful is one called musicJournal and it's basically a journal of the time spent rehearsing and playing or singing your repertoire. I decided I needed to play for at least one hour a day but have not been successful yet, but I'm working on it.

I divided my training program from singing vocal music, playing the acoustic guitar and the electric guitar. I tend to start my rehearsal routine with my own original music. The music journal app allows you to fix the tempo and has an in-built metronome. It records the amount of time you spend a day on one particular thing or working on one particular song and represents the information graphically.

It's been a while since my last blog and I have been blogging regularly on a weekly basis. There's been a lack of activity; social and playing in particular which gave me little to write about. I think the winter will be a quiet one and more for rehearsing and for recording. I have been visiting some of the clubs and looking for local musicians to collaborate with. I'd like to make some more videos similar to the one listed here below which was filmed in Brighton.
